The firm, which reported a turnover of Pounds 4.2m in 2013, has 45 employees. The company is a 66% shareholder in Emerald Biogas, a Pounds 8m food waste recycling plant which turns waste into renewable energy. It also works with the Pioneering Care Centre in Newton Aycliffe, a charity which aims to improve people's health and well being.

During the past year, J Warren has reduced its customers food miles by 96% and invested in technology to make its collection processes more efficient.


RUNNERS UP Alex Smiles LTD, Sunderland: Waste management company Alex Smiles Ltd employs 98 people and has a turnover of Pounds 12m. In 2013 it delivered a number of initiatives to improve staff development including working towards the North East Better Health at Work Bronze Award. In 2013, the skip hire company recycled up to 96% of the construction waste it received.

JC Atkinson & Son Ltd, Washington: Coffin and casket makers JC Atkinson & Sons are committed to sourcing products from sustainable sources. The company, which has 95 employees and a turnover of Pounds 7m in 2013, uses wood from the Forestry Stewardship Council sources to ensure sustainability. The firm began planting trees for each coffin sold in 1995 and has set up a services to collect waste from clients when it drops off deliveries in an attempt to reduce emissions.

WINNER TEESSIDE J & B Recycling Ltd, Hartlepool J& B Recycling currently processes around 4,000 tonnes per month of waste from local authorities and commercial businesses.

For the majority of its commercial customers it can provide a zero waste to landfill solution. J & B Recycling was established in 1998 and has continued to grow with its workforce now around 140.

The company has had a corporate social responsibility policy for a number of years as it believes strongly in engaging, respecting and supporting the community in which it works and strives to provide employment and economic opportunities in the areas where it operates.

RUNNERS UP Middleton Hall Retirement Village, Middleton St George: Home to zero carbon retirement properties set in a site designed to encourage wildlife, The Waterside development within Middleton Hall Retirement Village, launched last year. Middleton Hall has also been refurbished to reduce energy use. Its staff environment group and has implemented a cycle to work scheme and an incentive for car sharing and walking. It supports local wildlife in its grounds with bird boxes, a wetland garden and woodland walk.

Returnable Packaging Services Ltd, Maltby near Middlesbrough: Supplying a whole host of industrial packaging to businesses, RPS actively recovers commercial packaging for reuse, including wooden pallets and FIBC's (big bags). In 2011, RPS became ISO 14001 accredited and a year later achieved ISO 18001. Every pallet is refurbished or sent to local company for heat recovery in a biomass facility.

WINNER TYNESIDE & NORTHUMBERLAND Advanced Renewable Power Ltd, South Shields.

ARPOWER is an approved Green Deal installer, delivering energy efficient solutions to the North East and the Scottish Borders. Its products and services include solar PV, LED lighting, solar thermal, ground source heat pumps and most recently, A-rated gas central heating systems.

This year, it intends to expand into three new markets: biomass boilers, internal wall insulation and anaerobic digestion.

The core of the business is based on sustainable practices and the company now plans to build a 1MW Solar PV Park at an appropriate location in the North East, away from nearby communities.

RUNNERS UP Nestle UK Ltd, Fawdon: Nestle's Fawdon factory produces an average of 42,000 tonnes of product annually. Through its Lighthouse Project, it focuses on six environmental pillars: energy, water, waste, biodiversity, value chain, people and community.

The ultimate goal being to develop sustainable manufacturing. Nestle has reduced its carbon footprint through measures such as replacing a diesel van with a low-emission electric van.

South Tyneside Homes, Jarrow: South Tyneside Homes provides housing management services to South Tyneside Council for 17,900 rented properties and 700 leasehold homes. Recognising a corporate responsibility to help make households more energy efficient, it looks to educate both staff and residents about the issue, and carries out environmental measures across its business operations and housing stock.
