Fraunhofer HHI Presents High-Efficiency, Full HD, Real-Time HEVC Encoding and Decoding at NAB 2014

(Marketwire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) LAS VEGAS, NV -- (Marketwired) -- 04/07/14 -- NAB Booth #C7843 - The Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute HHI, a leader in the development of mobile and fixed broadband communication networks, multimedia systems, image processing and 3D, is showcasing its real-time encoding and decoding solutions for the recently established H.265/MPEG-HEVC video coding standard (HEVC) at this year's NAB. The solutions on display include the Fraunhofer HHI HEVC real-time software encoder and HEVC real-time software decoder.

Full HD 60Hz HEVC Real-Time Software Encoder Compared to its predecessor H.264/MPEG4-AVC, HEVC achieves about 50 percent bit rate reduction at the same subjective video quality. Only one year after completion of the standard specification, the Fraunhofer HHI real-time software encoder already demonstrates a significant bit rate reduction for full HD video at 60Hz. Additionally, the HEVC real-time software encoder can efficiently encode 1080p60 full HD video input from SDI and output an MPEG-2 transport stream over IP.

At NAB, Fraunhofer HHI is demonstrating the whole encoding chain, in which the SDI real-time input comes from an ARRI Alexa camera, as well as from file playout together with audio. The HEVC encoded video output packaged as an MPEG-2 transport stream is then fed over IP to the Fraunhofer HHI player system that decodes and plays the stream on a full HD TV.

4K 60Hz HEVC Real-Time Software Decoder With its efficient multi-threading architecture, the Fraunhofer HHI real-time software HEVC decoder enables real-time decoding of video content at resolutions of up to 4K 10bit at 60Hz for all currently specified HEVC profiles.

At NAB, Fraunhofer HHI is showcasing an application of the decoder in its own 4K player system. In this demonstration, the player takes MPEG-2 transport stream input over different interfaces, including fast/gigabit Ethernet (UDP/TCP/multicast), DVB-ASI or from a file. For the first time the video and audio output is over HDMI 2.0 on an 84" 4K TV.

Fraunhofer HHI is part of the Fraunhofer Digital Cinema Alliance. The Alliance provides a network of deep expertise and intelligence for the development of scalable technologies and international standards that allow customers to stay ahead the market.
