IS boosts capacity with Infinera [ITWeb]

(ITWeb Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) With this deployment of Infinera's DTN-X platform, Internet Solutions is able to light up high-bandwidth capacity on its 2 000km fibre network, the ISP says.

Internet service provider (ISP) Internet Solutions (IS) has deployed the Infinera DTN-X platform across the company's South African long-distance fibre network.

IS says the investment, believed to range in the region of R60 million, is the first deployment of its kind in SA and the African continent.

Infinera, a US-based manufacturer of long-haul wave division multiplexing optical transmission equipment for the service provider market, says IS is the first ISP to deploy its 500G super-channels in SA with Infinera Intelligence Transport Network.

Speaking during a media briefing yesterday in Rosebank, Prenesh Padayachee, CTO, IS, said the reason for the deployment is to meet business requirements across the South African economy that is starting to evolve.

"Fibre is becoming more accessible to business today. We need to give businesses online the ability to become part of the online economy. With this 500G super channel equipment, we now have the ability to provision bandwidth faster," said Padayachee.

"We have chosen equipment that allows us to expand capacity without having to do forklift upgrades. With this deployment of Infinera's DTN-X platform, Internet Solutions is able to light up high-bandwidth capacity on our 2 000km fibre network," said Padayachee.

"This also allows us end-to-end control over our fibre deployments which ultimately gives us full control over every aspect of our fibre networks" he added.

Businesses will also benefit from the capacity boost that is inherent within Infinera's 500Gbps FlexCoherent super-channels platform – this includes the management of redundancy that is critical for uninterrupted connectivity services, the ISP says.

It adds that utilising some of the more advanced features on the DTN-X platform, IS is now also able to provision protected circuits to clients at the telco infrastructure layer. These protected circuits provide additional connectivity protection and security, and it allows the ISP to provision back-up fibre routes to clients directly.

With the deployment of the Infinera DTN-X platform, IS has a total capacity of 8Tb/s (terabits per second) on its fibre backbone.

Also speaking at the event yesterday, Chris Champion, senior VP EMEA at Infinera, said 8Tb/s is more than the entire Internet capacity in 2005 and is also equivalent to 1.2 million HD videos being streamed simultaneously.

"Infinera was founded on the promise of using massive innovation to address service provider challenges," said Champion.

"We believe that South Africa's bandwidth requirements will triple in the next year and the demand for bandwidth intensive applications and services will increase beyond anything that we have seen to date" said Padayachee.

"With this technology, we will be able to deploy additional bandwidth intensive services such as content distribution services and replication services for disaster recovery, without cost constraints, and which are critical for businesses wanting to ensure that no data is lost across its servers or network." As the [software-defined networks] era advances, IS will also be looking to provide both clients and the wholesale market with the ability to create and control their own virtual network without actually owning any part of the Layer 1 infrastructure. This is a possibility with the Infinera Intelligent Transport Network solution.

"For Internet Solutions, this deployment of Infinera's cutting-edge network technology will enable us to differentiate ourselves and our services from other ICT providers. This is particularly important as we scale our network to meet the growing industry demand," Padayachee concluded.
