Sharjah phone scam suspects arrested [Gulf News (United Arab Emirates)]


(Gulf News (United Arab Emirates) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Sharjah: The Sharjah Police have arrested three Asian men for illegally selling cheap telephone calls, via the internet, and hiding the equipment inside their accommodation in one of Sharjah industrial area.



The Criminal Investigation Department at Sharjah Police formed a team after receiving a tip off that three Asian men had transformed their accommodation into an illegal call centre by breaking into telephone systems.

The police team managed to collect information about the fraudsters which helped them find their location. They raided their location and they were caught red-handed.


Their accommodations were raided and the suspects were arrested on Wednesday.

Equipment used to operate the illegal call centre was found hidden inside their accommodation. The equipment was then confiscated.

The suspects admitted making illegal phone calls through programmes connected to a server used for this purpose, and that he sold international calls at low rates.

Sharjah Police have warned the public, as well as owners of internet cafes, not to violate the rules of the Telecommunications Regulatory Act.

They also warned the public that they will be held responsible if they are caught making illegal phone calls.

Sharjah Police urged residents to report all suspected illegal and criminal activities in their areas on 999 or 06-5632222 or the toll-free number Najeed 800 151 or via SMS on 7999 or www.shjpolice.gov.ae/najeed.
