A date with latest gadgets at Oman's top IT show [Times of Oman]


(Times of Oman Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Muscat: Google will launch two new products at Oman's leading IT and Telecom Show- COMEX 2014, scheduled to be held from April 7 to 11 at Oman International Exhibition Centre.

The announcement was made during a press conference on Tuesday to announce the commencement of the expo, which will focus on "mobility" this year.

The event was attended by senior representatives from the Information Technology Authority (ITA) and Oman International Trade and Exhibitions (OITE), including Omar Salim Al Shanfari, deputy CEO for operations at ITA, Nick Hodge, managing director at OITE and Tarek Ali, general manager at OITE.



COMEX 2014 will highlight the latest consumer gadgets, business and government solutions available in Oman by local and international private sector representatives from the IT and telecom industry through its three main pavilions-COMEX Business, eGovernment and COMEX Shopper.

Speaking at the press conference, Al Shanfari said that the show would provide a great opportunity to introduce the eServices offered by government institutions.


According to him, 36 government institutions would participate in COMEX this year, along with some government agencies from Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Estonia, Singapore, and Lithuania.

According to the organisers, Google will launch new versions of Google Chrome and Google Cast at the expo.

The government will also launch new eServices and applications.

In addition, Nawras will make new offers to customers and Al Madina Development Supply LLC will offer shares at COMEX.  New participants at the show will be SAS and SMES in ICT, HP, Jawad Sultan, Modern Software, EZ Solutions, Al Ibdaa, Forefront, Al Madina, Ericsson, KODAK, Gulf Business Machines and Avaya.

The new initiatives at this year's edition include the COMEX Matchmaking platform, which ensures that participating companies are matched with prospective business partners. It targets 600 business match makings during the show.Global majors at Comex A conference and daily workshops will be held on the sidelines of the expo, and there will be a special zone for eSecurity, ePayments, eAccessibility and eLearning.

Shilpa Ashar, Project manager at OITE, told the Times of Oman that more than 75 companies will be represented at the event.

Half of them are local companies, she said, adding that 15 to 20 countries are going to showcase their products, including Singapore, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Malaysia, India, the UK, and France.

The major international participants include Microsoft, Avaya, Ericsson and Cisco, she added.    Ashit Barnes, senior manager at OITE, said that the participating countries will make special offers and prices will be very attractive for visitors.

The managing director at OITE highlighted the "retail/leisure" element of the show which provides a wonderful opportunity for the IT industry to get together.

There has been an increase in the international participation as Oman's economy is growing fast and more and more companies are developing an interest in this country, he said.

"This year would be the beginning of an evolution as we have started to develop different kinds of thinking for the show," Hodge added.

Comex 2014 is supported by Omantel, Telecommunications Regulatory Authority; MG-Group as strategic sponsor, and HUAWEI, Oman Data Park and Advanced Business Computing as lead sponsors.   The timings for Comex Business are from 10am to 9pm from April 7 to April 10 and from 4:30pm to 9pm on April 11. The timings for Comex Shopper are from 10am to 10pm from April 7 to April 10 and from 4:30pm to 10:30pm on April 11.
