Zix Corporation Applauds Google's Increased Use of Encryption

DALLAS --(Business Wire)--

Zix Corporation (ZixCorp), (NASDAQ: ZIXI), the leader in email encryption services, supports Google's (News - Alert) initiative to improve the secure email experience for Gmail users by forcing encryption through HTTPS connections. The new, mandatory HTTPS connections secure user access to Gmail, including from public WiFi (News - Alert), and as messages flow to Gmail servers.

As a result of HTTPS connections, communication between Gmail users is more secure; however when exchanging email with people who do not use Gmail, the messages and attachments can be at risk, because communicating to other email systems is not automatically secure. To further protect its customers, Google continues to offer Google Message Encryption, its joint secure email solution with ZixCorp. Google Message Encryption allows Google customers to extend the reach of their encrypted email communications beyond Google to all other email users.

"We applaud Google for its use of mandatory HTTPS and driving change in best practices. The decision is a reflection of a common need for increased data protection across consumers and businesses, and it complements the security measures of Google Message Encryption to protect outbound eail to all recipients," said Rick Spurr, ZixCorp's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "A combination of HTTPS and Google Message Encryption gives Google customers the confidence that whether the messages are transmitted to other Google customers or outside their secure boundaries to other email services, sensitive information in email is protected."

HTTPS became the default in 2010, but Gmail users had the option to turn off the secure connection. As of March 20, 2014, Google announced that HTTPS will be mandatory to protect email as users access Gmail and as messages flow to Gmail servers.

Google and ZixCorp have partnered on Google Message Encryption since 2007 to protect outbound email messages. Google Message Encryption scans outbound email and automatically secures the message and any attachments using Zix Email Encryption if sensitive information is detected. As discussed in the fourth quarter and full year earnings call on February 18, 2014, the latest version of Google Message Encryption is currently in the Google implementation process.

"With the constant news of data breaches, people and businesses are becoming more aware that valuable personal data is everywhere. Trying to recognize and secure the various channels that store and distribute personal data can be overwhelming and complicated," said Spurr. "Email is one of the greatest risks of data loss, and yet it can be one of the easiest channels to protect. ZixCorp provides a simple approach to email encryption. Our dedication to innovation and ease of use has made ZixCorp the leader in email encryption and enables us to maintain a partnership with Google that enhances email protection for its customers."

In addition to Google Message Encryption users, Zix Email Encryption is used by all federal financial regulators, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority and one in five U.S. banks. Also, more than 30 Blue Cross Blue Shield organizations and one in five U.S. hospitals use Zix Email Encryption to assist with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance.
