Honeywell to supply Qatar industrial plant [Construction Week (United Arab Emirates)]

(Construction Week (United Arab Emirates) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Honeywell will supply a new integrated control and safety system for Qatar Fuel Additives Company (QAFAC), it has been announced.

The overhaul will help QAFAC's Mesaieed Industrial City plant, 50km south of Doha, reduce operating costs and improve efficiencies for the production of Methanol and MTBE (methyl tertiary butylether), a key gasoline additive replacing lead and reducing tailpipe emissions.

Honeywell said the integrated control and safety solution, including a new fire and gas system, will improve automation at the plant, increase cyber security, and enhance operator effectiveness. QAFAC will also benefit from long-term services through Honeywell's lifecycle support.

QAFAC is a joint venture between state-backed Industries Qatar, OPIC Middle East, LCY and IOL.  It plans to become one of the top five international producers of Methanol and Butanederivatives by 2020. During this year it is also due to commission an $80mn carbon dioxide recovery project to capture 500 tonnes of CO 2 a day for re-injection into the production cycle, helping increase output.

NasserAl Kuwari, QAFAC general manager, said: "This project will ensure we meetgrowing demand for Methanol, MTBE and clean fuels efficiently, while achievingthe highest levels of safety and environmental performance at our site."
