Lenovo buying patents related to 3G, 4G tech in $100mn deal [Asian News International]

(Asian News International Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Washington, Mar. 22 (ANI): PC maker Lenovo is reportedly purchasing patents related to 3G and 4G technologies in a deal, which would help the Chinese company achieve an overall growth.

The company is buying the patents from US-based Unwired Planet, which develops mobile technologies in use by carriers including AT and T and Sprint, for a deal priced at 100 million dollars.

According to PC World, the 21 patent families Lenovo is purchasing would help it grow its smartphone and mobile business in new markets, as it sets about expanding with its proposed Motorola Mobility acquisition for 2.9 billion dollars.

After its deal with Lenovo closes in 30 days, Unwired Planet said that it would have about 2,500 issued and pending international patents in its portfolio.

The report said that as Lenovo aims to venture into the smartphone business with Motorola acquisition, the Chinese company would get a foothold in the North American Market and help shield itself from patent-related lawsuits that have been used to try to stymie the businesses of other handset makers.
