Mexico may impose higher fines on telecoms operators [ICT Monitor Worldwide]

(ICT Monitor Worldwide Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Mexico's Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) may impose penalties of up to 750,000 minimum wages, equivalent to MXN 49.2 million, according to the latest draft of the Secondary Law of the Federal Telecommunications and Broadcasting Act, reports El Universal. The proposal, to be submitted to Congress in the coming days, increases by more than seven times the maximum penalty set out in the Federal Telecommunications Act, which was 100,000 minimum wages.

The penalties may be doubled in the case of a Dominant Economic Agent, such as Televisa, Telmex and Telcel, and in case of recidivism the IFT may impose a fine equal to twice the amounts mentioned.

Moreover, the text indicates that a unique concession will be valid for 30 years and companies that request it may provide the full range of telecommunications and broadcasting services, such as fixed telephony, mobile telephony, internet, free-to-air and pay-TV. It may also be extended for the same period if requested by the concession holder.
