Airtel organises data services seminar for media [Ghana News Agency]

(Ghana News Agency Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Accra, March 13, GNA - Airtel Ghana on Tuesday organised a days seminar for some journalists on data network services, applications and high bandwidth data.

The journalists were also taken through introduction to cellular networks, 3G, 2G and 2.5G network architecture as well as network and fibre network challenges.

Mr Raymond Folly of Data Network at Airtel in a presentation explained that high bandwidth enables customers to have a range of new applications including video streaming, calls, clips and enhanced gaming, chat and location services.

He said businesses could also benefit from high speed teleworking access, video conferencing and financial information.

However, Mr Folly said network operators were faced with a lot of challenges associated with mobile handset like ageing, feature incompatibility, processor speed and battery.

He added that in some cases the server might not be available coupled with congestion due to multiple users and fault relating to hardware or software.

Mr Folly said fibre cable provided a transport medium for transmitting high speed and high capacity data across communication nodes and further provides the backbone for high 3G and 4G data traffic.

He said though regions and communities had been connected through fibre optic cable in an effort to enhance broadband internet service, fibre cuts and its effects on communication services affected operations.

Network challenges are due to rampant fibre cuts during road constructions and other development activitiesfibre cuts occur regularly and sometimes on a daily basis, resulting in disruption of communication services the general public, he said.

Additional presentations focused on the pros of bundles as being relatively cheaper while smartphones are permanently connected to the internet so one could use more data without realising it.
