(TendersInfo (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) FirstEnergy has offered a contract to Itron to provide over 2 million smart meters and its OpenWay smart grid platform for its four Pennsylvania-based utilities - Metropolitan Edison, Pennsylvania Electric, Pennsylvania Power and West Penn Power.

All the four utilities will receive Itron smart meters and a platform that Itron developed along with Cisco.

The platform is build around an IPv6 network architecture, that can manage far more smart meter data than conventional architectures.
