Inphi to Demonstrate 100GbE for Emerging PAM4 Network Signaling Standard at OFC 2014

(Marketwire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 03/11/14 -- Inphi Corporation (NYSE: IPHI), a leading provider of high-speed mixed signal semiconductor solutions for the communications and computing markets, today announced that it will demonstrate a 100GbE Four Level Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM4) transmission system over 10km single mode fiber at the Optical Fiber Conference (OFC). The technology demonstration will showcase the speed and bandwidth benefits PAM4, an emerging network signaling standard designed to increase data traffic loads and speed.

As a leading semiconductor company, Inphi regularly works with industry standards bodies such as the IEEE 802.3ba, P802.3ba 40Gb/s and 100Gb/s Ethernet Task Force and IEEE 400GE Study Group to develop next generation technology solutions. Inphi also worked with its ecosystem component vendors on the PAM4 technology demonstration, which will prove the 10Km over single-mode fiber concept and, in so doing, places Inphi in a leadership position for both 100G to 400G PAM4 client side, access and long haul 16QAM coherent solutions.

"Advances such as the one we are demonstrating today are invaluable to our data center, carrier and networking customers, who are relying on Inphi's leadership in connectivity to make the next generation data center and the network that supports it a reality," said Sudeep Bhoja, CTO, Networking and Communications at Inphi. "100Gb/s Optical modules size and cost are dominated by 4 lambdas today. PAM4 provides a path to a single lambda 100Gb/s solution enabling lower cost and power by shifting the complexity to electronics." Andrew Schmitt, Principal Analyst, Optical, at Infonetics, said, "The cost and power consumption of 100G optics in the datacenter is the biggest barrier to more rapid market growth. There have been improvements to existing multi-carrier short reach technology -- but single wavelength designs such as PAM4 are fundamentally the lowest cost solution, so the importance of Inphi's demonstration today of a viable 2km solution cannot be overstated." Together with products from ecosystem partners, this demonstration shows a path to 100Gb/s on a single lambda using PAM4 over 2km single mode fiber solution for cost and power effective connectivity in the data center PAM4 and Forward Error Correction technology can also provide spectrally efficient connectivity between data centers over reaches up to 80km.
