TE Connectivity Expands Its Fiber Optic Leadership Position at OFC 2014 with New Product Rollouts

MINNEAPOLIS --(Business Wire)--

TE Connectivity (News - Alert) (TE), a world leader in connectivity, enhances its leadership position in the fiber optics marketplace with the introduction of three innovative solutions at the Optical Fiber Communication (OFC) Conference this week at San Francisco's Moscone Center. First, the company's latest advancement in fiber optics - Coolbit optical engines, a platform engine that converts data from electrical signals -- is the driving technology behind its 100G to 400G optical connectivity portfolio. Second, TE unveils a new hybrid powered fiber cable system to eliminate the complexity of network access device installations. The system enables precise placement of devices, such as small cells in the network for maximum 4G wireless coverage by combining power and optical fiber communications into one solution. Third, TE introduces a new thermal adhesive coated (TAC) fiber system to bring optimal speed, flexibility and aesthetics to indoor optical fiber deployments for homes and businesses.

"Our customers are facing extraordinary challenges in building and operating competitive, revenue-generating fiber optic networks today," says David Brown (News - Alert), vice president and CTO of TE Broadband Networks. "Each of these new solutions is designed to meet one or more of those challenges. TE has earned a legacy of trusted leadership and innovation for many years that has allowed service providers to maximize the efficiency, flexibility and profitability of their networks."

TE's 25G optical modules, featuring Coolbit optical engines, enhance the company's fiber optics portfolio, offering faster, denser and more energy efficient connectivity solutions for short-reach Ethernet and InfiniBand standard applications. Providing much lower power consumption, Coolbit optical engines will be included in four new roducts in 2014: 100G QSFP28 active optical cables (AOCs); 100G QSFP28 transceivers; 300G mid-board optical modules (MBO); and 400G CDFP AOCs.

TE's powered fiber cable system speeds and simplifies the installation of small cells and other network access devices by incorporating the power supply, a hybrid cable and a remote powering unit that corrects for DC line loss to eliminate the need for electrical design calculations - all in one system. The system eliminates the need for local powering; extends reach to 10 times the distance of typical power-over-ethernet (PoE+) cables; reduces by half the up-front planning and engineering time for many small cell deployments; and basically acts as a "long extension cord" for fast and easy installation.

TE's thermal adhesive coated (TAC) fiber system uses a cordless, handheld fiber dispenser tool and 900-micron fiber cable with integrated adhesive to quickly and easily install fiber anywhere inside a building. When turned on, the handheld tool triggers the heat-activated micro cable, enabling the fiber to bond continuously to the surface area as it is being applied. The result is a faster, easier and much more aesthetically-pleasing indoor fiber installation that eliminates messy caulking, staples and brackets. The system cables work with field installable connectors or can be fusion spliced for connection to a wall plate or optical network terminal.
