Namibia benefits from Africa internet exchange project [Agence de Presse Africaine](Agence de Presse Africaine Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Namibia has become the latest country to benefit from the African Internet Exchange System (AIXS) project following the launch of Windhoek Internet Exchange Point (IXP).Speaking during the launch of the IXP in Windhoek, Deputy Information and Communication Technology Minister Stanley Simataa said Namibians would now be able to enjoy more secure, affordable and faster Internet services. He said for many years Namibia has relied on overseas carriers to exchange local and continental traffic, a development that has made Internet access in the country unaffordable. The Windhoek IXP is a physical infrastructure where Internet service and content providers are interconnected to allow data traffic to be exchanged among them. It is part of a wider AIXS project that aims to keep Africa's Internet traffic local by providing capacity building and technical assistance to facilitate the establishment of national and regional data exchange points in Africa. The project was launched by the AU Commission in 2012, following a declaration made by African leaders during the 14th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the AU held in January 2010.
