Rude, crude and must be viewed ; Games [Mirror (UK)]

(Mirror (UK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) SOUTH PARK: THE STICK OF TRUTH Xbox 360, PS3, PC Pounds 34.99- Pounds 39.99 Long delayed, The Stick Of Truth rights the wrongs of 15 years worth of shoddy South Park games.

You play the new kid in the Colorado town who, as Cartman insists, must go by the name Douchebag. The town's kids are out on the streets playing fantasy dress up, all wizards and elves, but when the universe controlling Stick Of Truth goes missing, it's up to Douchebag, ie you, to retrieve it.

In terms of writing and visuals, The Stick Of Truth is incredible. This is a feature length South Park episode that you control and take part in and the transition from linear TV show to interactive role-player has been superbly executed.

But strip away the hilarious script and spot-on visuals and you're left with a fairly formulaic RPG. That's not meant as a big criticism though. Combat is a mixture of turn-based menu selections and contextually-timed blocks and power attacks. The Stick Of Truth knows the tropes of the genre well and is playful with its conventions.

South Park is a tricky licence to nail in video game format, with the TV show being so unrelentingly funny and offensive. The Stick Of Truth pulls off the difficult task with aplomb. While it's not the greatest RPG ever made, it is one of the best gaming adaptations of all time.
