CU-Boulder spinoff Advanced Conductor Technologies commercializes high-performance cable technology [Daily Camera, Boulder, Colo. :: ]

(Daily Camera (Boulder, CO) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) March 06--Boulder-based Advanced Conductor Technologies LLC has started to commercialize a high-performance semiconductor cable that resulted from technology developed at the University of Colorado and the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

Advanced Conductor Technologies' products consist of high-temperature superconductor cables designed to be thinner, more flexible and, as such, are applicable to new markets that include electrical grids, nuclear fusion power and data centers.

"We recently received our first commercial order for a high current CORC (conductor on round core) magnet cable and are currently winding the cable needed to fill the order," Danko van der Lean, founder of the CU-spinoff Advance Conductor Technologies and the inventor of the technology, said in a statement. "We're optimistic that more orders will follow, enabling us to scale up our cabling facility." Advanced Conductor Technologies has three employees, officials said in a news release.

Since optioning the technology from CU in 2012, Advanced Conductor Technologies has received grants from the U.S. Department of Energy and U.S. Navy to apply its CORC cables for use in magnets that generate nuclear fusion power and for use in shipboard power transmission cables, respectively.

Advanced Conduction Technologies and CU have entered into an exclusive licensing agreement. The two entities also have filed patent applications internationally for this technology, officials said in the announcement.

Terms of the license agreement were not disclosed.

Van der Lean and officials for CU's Technology Transfer Office could not be reached for comment.
