New HIV Healthcare Center Offers Expert Care in Gretna

GRETNA, La. --(Business Wire)--

AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) opened its newest domestic Healthcare Center in Gretna, Louisiana, in January. The facility offers advice from HIV experts and opportunities for client-centered, specialized treatment and care for people living with HIV/AIDS.

AHF Healthcare Centers aim to decrease the number of new HIV/AIDS diagnoses by providing free HIV testing so people can be aware of their status; immediate linkage into care - regardless of ability to pay - for those who test positive; and support through ongoing follow-ups to ensure adherence to a health regimen that will ultimately extend life expectancies and reduce the risk of transmission.

According to the Louisiana Office of Public Health, there were 17,735 documented cases of people living with HIV in Louisiana in 2011, of whom 9,650 (54%) had progressed to AIDS. AHF opened its first Louisiana Healthcare Center in Baton Rouge in June, and the staff of that clinic will also operate the Gretna clinic. AHF's centers offer opportunities for services in the public health regions that have been most impacted by new HIV infections according to the 2011 report, which are New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Shreveport.

"Even though we are just across the river from New Orleans, the lack of primary care providers specializing in HIV care in Gretna can have a devastating impact on people living with the virus here," said AHF Gretna Healthcare Center provider Leah Cullins, FNP. "The new clinic offers both expert care and the opportunity for walk-in HIV testing, which are two of the biggest factors in controlling HIV/AIDS in any region."

AHF operates more than 20 Healthcare Centers throughout the United States - in Florida, California, Georgia, Ohio, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New York, Nevada, and Washington, D.C. - and many more in the countries where AHF works throughout Asia, Africa, Europe, and Latin America. More information about Healthcare Center services and locations can be found at www.hivcare.org.
