OUT & ABOUT: Wyndham eyes Cox employees [Northwest Florida Daily News, Fort Walton Beach :: ]

(Northwest Florida Daily News (Fort Walton Beach) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) March 02--Last week I wrote about Cox Communications closing their Fort Walton Beach customer call center and up to 27 people could lose their jobs.

After the story broke, Martin Owen, the marketing director for Wyndham Vacation Rentals, contacted me so I could let people know Wyndham is ramping up for the busy tourist season and will have about 25 openings to fill between now and summer at its large call center on Mary Esther Cut-Off.

Owen let me know Wyndham Vacation Rentals would reach out to the Cox Communications employees, but if any of them are reading this, or really, anyone at all interested in working at Wyndham can go to wyndhamvacationrentals.com and click on the "employment" link at the bottom of the page.

We do live in a great community and it's so nice to hear stories about people, in this case a business, helping one another out. Good luck to everyone affected by the Cox call center closing down.

--- Speaking of luck, there is a small group of economic development leaders attending this year's the 28th SpeedNews Commercial Aviation Industry Suppliers Conference in Beverly Hills right now, and we should wish them luck as they sell Northwest Florida to aerospace companies from around the world.

Larry Sassano, president of Florida's Great Northwest; Shannon Ogletree, Santa Rosa County's economic development director; Neal Wade, director of the Bay County Economic Development Alliance; John Hutchinson, Gulf Power's director of public affairs and economic development; and Ed Gardner, economic development representative for PowerSouth Energy Cooperative, are representing the region at the event.

Some 300 to 350 major suppliers, businesses like Boeing, Airbus, and Embrae, will attend the conference to discuss the trends and cutting edge technology this rapidly growing sector of aviation and aerospace.

"These are major aerospace and aviation suppliers from around the world," Sassano told me before he left. "You don't do a heavy sale (when you talk to the business representatives at the conference), but you do a nice soft approach. They like talking about their companies and we like hearing about their companies." Florida's Great Northwest is even one of the sponsors of the conference, so part of the program that a business leader will see is a video produced by Gulf Power that highlights Northwest Florida's assets in the aviation and aerospace industry.
