Google's modular smartphones could release next year [T-break Tech (Middle East)]

(T-break Tech (Middle East) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Imagine – you want to upgrade your phone to better specs, but instead of hunting down for new models and compare prices, you simply yank out the processor from the device and replace it a new, faster one.

This is called a modular architecture, where you can replace individual parts of the device seamlessly – much like a PC if you will, but hopefully a lot less complex when it comes to smartphones.

Development of modular smartphones is accelerating at a quickened pace, and if everything goes to plan, the technology could be available as soon as next year. According to Time, Google is currently building such modular devices under it’s Project Ara R&D branch, and hopes to ship modular smartphones by 2015 for as little as $50.

“The smartphone is one of the most empowering and intimate objects in our lives,” said Paul Eremenko, who heads up Project Ara for Google ATAP. ”Yet most of us have little say in how the device is made, what it does, and how it looks.” Currently, Google plans to release three different sizes of modular smartphones, from cheap $50 devices, to possibly premium large phablets.
