Romo elected chairman of SwRI Board of Directors Lee named vice chairman

Dan Bates, president of Southwest Research Institute, announced the election of Dr. Ricardo Romo and Milton B. Lee to chairman and vice chairman, respectively, of SwRI's Board of Directors today during the Institute's annual meeting.



Romo is president of The University of Texas at San Antonio. He became an SwRI Board member in 2006 and served as Board vice chairman from 2011-2013. Lee is general manager and CEO (ret.), CPS Energy, San Antonio. He became a Board member in 2006.

'SwRI and UTSA have a long-standing relationship, so we are honored that Ricardo will continue his Board service as chairman,' Bates said.


SwRI and UTSA have closely collaborated since UTSA's inception. More recently, SwRI and UTSA have collaborated on a number of efforts including graduate programs in space physics and mechanical engineering and the Connect Program, a jointly funded internal research program. SwRI executive management also serve on UTSA advisory councils.

'Milton has been a valued member of the Board, and we look forward to his service as vice chairman,' Bates added. 'I'm confident these gentlemen will provide strong leadership to help SwRI continue its mission of benefiting society through innovative science and technology.' Bates announced the addition of three trustees. They are Richard W. Calvert; Dr. Gabriele Niederauer, senior director, R&D, ENT-Sinus, ArthroCare Corporation and Richard Schlosberg, publisher and CEO (ret.), Los Angeles Times. Calvert, an SwRI Board member since 1968, retired from the Board in November.

The re-election of Institute officers was also announced. SwRI officers are J. Dan Bates, president; Walter D. Downing, executive vice president; Beth Ann Rafferty, CFO, vice president-Finance and Institute secretary; Linda M. Boehme, treasurer and assistant Institute secretary and John W. McLeod, vice president and general counsel.

Also re-elected are Vice Presidents Dr. James L. Burch, Space Science and Engineering; Bruce B. Bykowski, Engine, Emissions and Vehicle Research; Susan B. Crumrine, Automation and Data Systems; Danny M. Deffenbaugh, Mechanical Engineering; Paul Easley, Facilities and Services; Mary C. Massey, Applied Power; Dr. Michael G. MacNaughton, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering; Steven D. Marty, Fuels and Lubricants Research; Dr. Wesley C. Patrick, Geosciences and Engineering; Nils Smith, Signal Exploitation and Geolocation and Richard D. Somers, Aerospace Electronics, Systems Engineering and Training. Kenneth H. Bennett was elected vice president of the Applied Physics Division.

Bates noted the Institute had another successful year, with reported gross revenue of $592 million, compared to $584 million in fiscal year 2012, and net income of $35 million. Total payroll was $238 million.

SwRI employs a staff of approximately 3,000 nationwide, with more than 2,800 in San Antonio.
