A.G. Holder Should Focus on Prosecuting 'Hactivists' Says Terry

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) WASHINGTON, Feb. 24 -- Rep. Lee Terry, R-Neb. (2nd CD), issued the following news release: U.S Rep. Lee Terry (R-NE), Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee's Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade, made the following statement on Attorney General Holder's call for Congress to pass a federal data breach notification standard in the wake of breaches at major retailers across the country: "I'm pleased to hear this administration wanting to engage Congress and join me to take meaningful action that protects consumers' personal information.

"The Attorney General should already know that I have been calling for a federal data breach notification standard for months and have already held hearings with witnesses from both Target and Neiman Marcus as well as the appropriate law enforcement agencies. At this week's hearing on the FTC, I fully expect data breach notification to again be discussed.

"I support the Attorney General's efforts to prosecute "hactivists" who steal personal data and encourage him to share his ideas on what Congress can do to strengthen his efforts to bring these criminals to justice. But Congress does the hard work of drafting legislation through the committee process and not the Administration through weekly addresses on You Tube.

I would also invite the Attorney General to share his concerns on privacy with the White House so that he can better protect Americans private information whether it be through securing healthcare.gov against data breaches, prosecuting those individuals at the IRS responsible for targeting conservative groups or reforming the NSA's data collection programs."
