Ericsson To Manage MTN's Network In 5 Nigerian Cities [Ventures Africa]

(Ventures Africa Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) VENTURES AFRICA – Leading provider of communications technology and services, Ericsson has signed a managed services deal with MTN Nigeria, the country's largest mobile operator with over 55 million subscribers, to operate MTN’s network in 5 Nigerian cities.

The deal, which will last for 5 years makes Ericsson MTN’s largest managed services partner in Africa. Ericsson has more than 300 contracts for managed services with operators worldwide.

Ericsson will, according to the contract, takeover optimization, management and field maintenance of MTN’s network infrastructure in Nigerians cities including Abuja, Asaba, Enugu, Lagos and Port Harcourt, representing 75% of its network.

“This engagement with Ericsson is a logical step forward in our strategy execution and is consistent with our commitment to deliver a bold new digital world to our customers across Nigeria," said Mr. Michael Ikpoki, MTN Nigeria's CEO.

Ikpoki noted that Ericsson's takeover will afford MTN Nigeria the opportunity to focus on other things as the company continues working to improve services and customer experience.

The agreement however excludes strategic design and planning or equipment purchasing decisions, which will remain the responsibility of MTN. Ownership and absolute control of network assets also remains with MTN.

“This agreement with MTN, Nigeria’s largest telecom operator, marks a milestone for Ericsson in Nigeria and in the region,” said Jean-Claude Geha, Head of Managed Services at Ericsson.

Following the agreement, network operators can leverage on Ericsson's expertise to improve network availability and capacity, while also reducing operating costs.
