Upgrade now to avoid system compromise [Grimsby Telegraph (UK)]
(Grimsby Telegraph (UK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) COMPANIES still doing business using some of the world's most popular computer software and its second-favourite operating system are being warned that the need to upgrade is becoming urgent. In a matter of weeks Microsoft will stop supporting its XP operating system and Office 2003, which means their days are definitely numbered.
Kevin Drinkall, MD of Cleethorpes-based IT specialist Vixsoft Systems, explained that on April 8 Microsoft will end support for both products. "It doesn't mean they'll stop working, but it does mean an end to security updates, free or paid-for support and online technical content updates.
"And that brings security risks for companies. They may find that external audit bodies suspend certification, or that customer information is compromised," he said, adding that independent software companies were also unlikely to continue ensuring that their products remained compatible.
"Companies that still operate XP after April 8 need to be aware that they're doing so at their own risk. As time passes security software won't protect them, and web browsing will become more difficult," he said.
"Windows XP was introduced in 2001, and is still extremely popular because it is stable and fast. Although people have grown used to it and are comfortable with it, Vixsoft strongly recommends that all companies still using it should move to Windows 7 or Windows 8, to avoid having their systems and business compromised.
"Windows 7 is a popular and successful operating system, and has been widely adopted in the business world. It's also a reasonably small leap for most users. The Windows 8 interface is completely different, and the learning curve is much steeper, but it is still worth considering," he added.
