Barstow Film Office anticipates busy year [Desert Dispatch, Barstow, Calif. :: ]

(Desert Dispatch (Barstow, CA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Feb. 07--BARSTOW -- After casting local talent for a film project designed to market and promote the city, the Barstow Film Office remains optimistic it will successfully attract more filmmakers.

Barstow city spokesman and Barstow Film Office Consultant Anthony Riley said now that filming has wrapped on the city's promo project, the next step is to prepare for the film industry to come "knocking at Barstow's doorstep." CL3 Productions began filming a marketing and promotional video at the old Barstow Community Hospital on Jan. 30 and wrapped up filming Feb. 1.

Riley described the old BCH building as a "gem" to have at the city's disposal to market to the film industry.

The film's director and screenwriter D.J. Lopez agreed.

"The fact that Barstow has this old hospital at its disposal is such a huge asset for the city," Lopez said. "It's really hard to find something like this down in Los Angeles. Usually these types of sets have to be built and staffed and it can get really hard to try to get things to look right." Riley said he feels the old BCH building sets Barstow apart from other cities in Southern California. Riley said the ability to "dress it up and give it a modern feel" allows Barstow to cater to filmmakers of different genres, ranging from medical docu-dramas and horror, to thriller and suspense films.

Riley said the promo film will be complete in time for an upcoming tour for location managers in the spring.

"This film will make these prospective filmmakers envision the potential of their projects," Riley said. "If we're not doing things like this to advertise what we have as an asset, no one will ever know about this. Production companies will be coming out to look at the hospital, and a key to making them consider filming here is the availability of all our hotel and catering opportunities. This will open up opportunities for our business community to meet their needs as well as our community of local talent." Although there are several production companies set to visit Barstow in the coming weeks, Riley said he cannot discuss their plans until they become official.
