Buckling Under Al-Shabaab Pressure, Hormuud Shuts Off Internet Services in Mogadishu

(AllAfrica Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Hormuud Telecom on Thursday (February 6th) disconnected mobile internet services in Mogadishu after increasing pressure from al-Shabaab militants who ordered telecommunications companies to stop providing internet services last month, Somalia's Mareeg reported.

Hormuud's shut down of mobile internet services in Mogadishu comes less than a week after al-Shabaab arrested 16 of the company's employees in Jilib town in Middle Jubba region, including branch manager Mohamud Haji Salad.

However, the militants reportedly allowed the resumption of mobile internet services in Middle and Lower Jubba regions on Thursday, according to RBC Radio.
