The Shuman Law Firm Investigates IPC The Hospitalist Company, Inc.

BOULDER, Colo. --(Business Wire)--

The Shuman Law Firm announces that it is investigating potential claims against certain officers and directors of IPC (News - Alert) The Hospitalist Company, Inc. ("IPC" or the "Company") (IPCM). IPC is a California-based naional physician group practice company that operates and manages full-time hospitalist practices.

The Firm's investigation concerns the December 9, 2013, announcement by the U.S. Department of Justice that it had intervened in a lawsuit that alleges that IPC submitted false claims to federal health care programs. The lawsuit alleges that IPC physicians sought payment for higher and more expensive levels of medical service than were actually performed - a practice commonly known as "upcoding." The lawsuit was originally filed by Dr. Bijan Oughatiyan, a former IPC physician, who alleges that IPC encouraged its physicians to bill at the highest levels regardless of the level of service provided, trained physicians to use higher level codes and encouraged physicians with lower billing levels to "catch up" to their peers.
