Rent-A-Center Helps to Extend Learning beyond the School Day

DALLAS --(Business Wire)--

Kids-U, formerly known as Dallas Community Lighthouse, today received 16 tablet computers valued at $4,000 from Rent-A-Center. The donation is tied to a philanthropic initiative dubbed Random Acts of Caring. Launched in 2008, the initiative provides unexpected donations of merchandise and funding to deserving nonprofits across the country.

Founded in 2002 by Diana Baker and Paula DeGroat, the mission of Kids-U is to assist at-risk students in achieving academic success by providing free on-site, after-school tutoring in low-income apartment communities. Kids-U was also presented with an unexpected check for $1,000. The funds will be used to provide additional resources and educational support to Kids-U's eight Dallas area locations.

"It is important in today's digital world that the economically disadvantaed children we work with have access to the latest technology," said Diane Baker, executive director at Kids-U. "Often these low-income students fall behind their peers as a result of the growing technology divide. The addition of the tablets at our Kids-U sites will have a huge impact on our students."

"We selected Kids-U in recognition of the organization's efforts in meeting the needs and improving the lives of at-risk youth," said Kenneth Jones, public affairs manager at Rent-A-Center. "Today marks the 95th Random Act of Caring undertaken since Rent-A-Center launched this initiative to support the communities it serves."
