Pepco Holdings Inc. Goes Live With GRIDiant's Advanced Grid Analytics for Reliability

(GlobeNewswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) LOS ALTOS, Calif., Jan. 27, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- GRIDiant Corporation announced today the go-live of GRIDplan Reliability, an advanced grid management software application for network reliability and improvements analysis at Pepco a wholly owned subsidiary of Pepco Holdings, Inc. (PHI). This installation represents another step in Pepco's broad program of measures toward upgrading its systems and enhancing reliability of service for its customers. [Note to editors: GRIDiant will be at DistribuTECH 2014, Jan. 28-30, in San Antonio, Booth 2965.] GRIDplan Reliability, features high-definition grid simulation and visualization, grid analytics, and optimization applications provided to Pepco under license from GRIDiant. The application affords Pepco engineers and executives new capabilities for visualizing and analyzing historic and current network outages, and for identifying and ranking the most cost-effective capital and operational strategic investment initiatives for delivering network reliability improvement.

Pepco is a regulated electric utility providing electricity transmission and distribution services to 533,000 customers in Montgomery and Prince George's Counties in Maryland and 260,000 customers in the District of Columbia.

"GRIDplan Reliability software promises a tremendous benefit from smart grid investments that Pepco has made system-wide in recent years in intelligent electric system automation hardware and communications," said William Gausman, PHI's senior vice president, Strategic Initiatives. "It will allow our employees to analyze new data streams from those investments, and to develop unprecedented visualization which gives us a better understanding of our electric system performance.  With GRIDplan Reliability, we will be able to identify and display, with greater accuracy—in a fraction of the engineering time previously required—the most cost-effective solutions for making our network and our service to customers safer, more reliable and more efficient."  Basil Allison, chief engineer at PHI added, "During detailed evaluation on a subset of Pepco's Distribution System, GRIDplan Reliability allowed us to model, simulate and geospatially visualize our network and service interruptions under historical and current scenarios and to assess and analyze those outages and their impacts on SAIDI and SAIFI.  It also provided the cost estimates of the remedial actions and their impacts on the above for improved system planning and network reliability.  Based on the results achieved, GRIDplan Reliability performed as promised and we are eager to expand this capability to the entire Distribution System." Soorya Kuloor, GRIDiant CEO and CTO, has led GRIDiant's work with PHI and Pepco.  "GRIDplan Reliability offers unique engineering and utility business intelligence to complement the Pepco grid modernization program, which is one of the most comprehensive in the world," said Dr. Kuloor. "It provides a powerful new analytic approach, with results delivered to Pepco engineers in interactive graphic, tabular, and geospatial displays. We are pleased to have been able to work with Pepco to deliver to them this next-generation software grid analytics."  About GRIDiant GRIDiant provides an Advanced Grid Management (AGM™) suite of simulation, analytics, optimization, and analysis software, comprising a unique platform of applications for electric power networks driven by its patented GRIDfast™ engine. GRIDplan Reliability represents one specific application module.  Developed and validated over 10 years, GRIDiant AGM allows electric utilities to optimize in real-time the operations and planning of transmission, distribution, and combined T&D networks, and to see the analytic results displayed geospatially on state-of-the art, interactive UIs. GRIDiant AGM allows electric utilities to leverage data from GIS, SCADA, OMS, AMI, sensors and other equipment to realize savings through improved reliability, reduced technical and non-technical losses, heightened operating efficiency, increased asset utilization and enhanced demand response.
