Geisinger plans to open Mount Pleasant facility in May [The Times-Tribune, Scranton, Pa. :: ]

(Times-Tribune (Scranton, PA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Jan. 25--The place where Stephen Hill stood Friday is not much to look at now: folded ladders, open boxes and paint cans sit on the concrete floor just inside the building's makeshift entrance.

But in about four months, the facility will feature 30 outfitted primary care exam rooms, a pharmacy, a women's health unit and other services. "We're ahead of schedule, but most of the work left is floor finishes and adding furniture," said Mr. Hill, a Geisinger Health System senior facilities planner.

Nearly 11 months after the project's groundbreaking, officials on Friday tabbed late May for the opening of Geisinger-Mount Pleasant.

An $18.1 million project, the two-floor facility will be home to Geisinger's primary care practices, along with pediatric specialties and specialists. The new location will also include radiology services, such as mammography and ultrasound, nursing stations and clinic space.

At 45,000 square feet, the building more than doubles Geisinger's Lake Scranton community practice, which will be moved into the new facility.

After operating at the Lake Scranton facility for 28 years, Geisinger opted to relocate to a space where it had the potential to expand and add family practice physicians, officials said.

"We simply outgrew that building," said Kathy Lloyd, associate vice president of community practice at Geisinger Health System.

She said officials haven't decided if they will sell the 19,000-square-foot Lake Scranton facility.

With the added space, Geisinger expects to employ 85 people at its Mount Pleasant location -- 17 more than it has at its Lake Scranton facility.

As contractors finish the flooring and insulate the building, they will also begin installing the office furniture in early February. The process will take about six to eight weeks, Mr. Hill estimated.

"Then the (information technology) people will install the computers and TVs," he said. "We're getting closer."
