Nextel brand not making a comeback, report says [The Kansas City Star :: ]

(Kansas City Star (MO) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Jan. 24--No, no Nextel.

The once popular brand is not making a comeback at Sprint Corp., according to a post at FierceWireless.com.

Unconfirmed reports had circulated that the Overland Park-based wireless company had plans to resurrect Nextel as a business brand.

FierceWireless quoted Matt Carter, president of Sprint Enterprise Solutions, as having not "personally heard anything about that at all." It quoted Sprint spokesman John Votava to say, "There is no plan to bring back the Nextel brand." Sprint had become Sprint Nextel Corp. when it merged with Nextel Communications in 2005. At the time, Nextel was a popular wireless provider principally because of its push-to-talk feature. Businesses with workers in the field particularly liked the instant connections it provided.

The merger, however, came to be known as one of the worst deals of the decade and precipitated a dismal decline in Sprint's fortunes. Customers left in droves. Financial losses mounted.

Last June, Sprint formally shut down the old Nextel network.

It dropped Nextel from its corporate name in July as part of the $21.6 billion transaction that gave Tokyo-based SoftBank Corp. a controlling stake in Sprint.
