The California Endowment and Area Political and Business Leaders to Send Door-to-Door Volunteer Operation to Get Chronically Absent Kids Back in School

WHAT:

The California Endowment will convene the second in a series of
its signature Sons and Brothers Student Recovery Days to
galvanize parents, students, teachers, community-based
organizations, civic leaders and volunteers to go door-to-door and
recover chronically absent youth by bringing them back to school
or connecting their family to the appropriate social service
needed to address what could be clinical issues requiring varying
forms of professional assistance.

WHY:
|
|
California's future is in color. More than 70% of people in
California under the age of 25 identify as persons of color in the
2010 Census. We cannot succeed without them, yet far too many of our
boys and young men of color are falling behind in school or are in
crisis. The Chambers of Commerce support this work because they know
the success of boys and young men of color is important to
California's future economic outlook. The California Endowment has
made a commitment to helping improve the outcomes for boys and young
men of color and has allocated significant financial and
intellectual resources to that effort.

Note to reporters and editors:
The day will be highlighted by a "keep kids in school" program in which
partners will go into the community to the homes of absent students in
an effort to bring them back to school and connect their family to any
needed social services. This program will begin with an 8:30 am press
conference, followed by a 9:00 a.m. volunteer training and dispatch.
Volunteers will go door-to-door in the surrounding community and return
at 12 noon for lunch and debriefing. Reporters will not be allowed to
accompany volunteers to the homes of absent students due to privacy
issues.
