Johnston Press appoints new digital supremo to accelerate internet drive [Scotsman, The (Scotland)]
(Scotsman, The (Scotland) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) JOHNSTON Press, which owns The Scotsman newspaper, has unveiled Jeff Moriarty as chief digital and product officer, a new role to develop the company's growing internet operations.Moriarty, who joins in April, is currently vice-president, digital products, for the Boston Globe and general manager for Boston.com in the United States.Johnston Press said Moriarty had "led the design and development of what is considered to be among the most successful regional subscription-based sites in the US, the award-winning BostonGlobe.com".In that role he pioneered the use of "responsive web design" to embrace the consumer shift to mobile devices.He spent much of his previous career at the New York Times, where he helped the company grow the digital businesses in 14 regional newspaper markets across America.Moriarty's arrival follows the departure of Johnston's previous digital development director, Henry Faure Walker, to become chief executive at Newsquest.Ashley Highfield, chief executive of Johnston Press, said Moriarty's record was "exceptional". He said: "The knowledge, experience, insight and innovation that Jeff will bring to Johnston Press will help us forge ahead with our ambitious growth plans."Our digital revenues have grown 60 per cent over the past year, and in many parts of the UK they now account for 20 per cent of our overall advertising revenues, compared with only 5 per cent as recently as in 2010."Johnston shares closed up 2.4 per cent at 21.5p.
