Safety training centre opened for construction workers [Gulf Times (Qatar)]

(Gulf Times (Qatar) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Korean Ambassador Chung Keejong is briefed about the training facilities at the centre. By Joey Aguilar/Staff Reporter Korean-led consortium Samsung C&T and its two partners opened a safety training centre in Al Matar street last week to enhance the skills of about 8,000 construction workers. This workforce will be working for the $1.4bn Msheireb and Education City Metro Station package.

However, Samsung C&T disclosed that they are only expecting to train about 500 to 1,000 workers this year.

Korean Ambassador Chung Keejong believes that the centre will contribute to improving safety awareness during the implementation of Qatar Railway projects.

"The Korean government pays more consideration to the safety of the people without sacrificing the quality of the projects. Safety in the construction site is also very important," he stressed.

Keejong and some embassy officials visited the centre last week. They were briefed about the plans and on-going development of the project.

The facility was designed to cover all major aspects of safety training which included electrical safety, lifting equipment awareness, fire extinguisher training, mobile scaffolding awareness, fall from heights, use of fall arrest systems, use of protective equipment, and the proper use of temporary facilities.

Workers will also be briefed about the procedures on lifting and crane operations and understanding safety signages.

Trainers will provide visual demos and practical training on the different aspects of worksite safety. This will give workers an easy and better understanding of these concepts. After the training, workers will also undergo an actual test before deploying them to the site.

The ambassador noted that the Qatar government is encouraging safety on the construction site and the Korean company has always been co-operating on this matter.

Samsung C&T trains about 30 persons per batch (at least one batch a day) but it is ready to train at least two or more batches per day. The centre will operate until the end of the construction period.

Keejong said some slogans such as "Papa we pray for your safety!" have been posted in the construction site which serve as reminders for the workers. "This is a priceless thing so we have to take care of the workers for their families." As a company policy, it is learnt that Samsung C&T builds a safety training centre for each of their construction projects. It also has two projects in Lusail City and had built a separate centre similar to the facility in Al Matar Street. The initiative was also part of their corporate social responsibility.

Keejong said Samsung C&T was established in 1977. It is one of the best Korean companies.
