Firetide Wireless Mesh Network Underpins Surveillance at the National Congress of Kuomintang in Taiwan

(Marketwire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) CAMPBELL, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 11/20/13 -- A high-bandwidth wireless mesh network developed by Firetide Inc., the technology leader in private wireless broadband networks, was at the heart of an advanced surveillance system that recently ensured the protection of President Ma Ying-Jeou and other VIPs at the 19th National Congress of Kuomintang in Taichung, Taiwan. Firetide's partners in the region, V&V International Trading Co., Ltd. and Hi-Power Solution Group, were able to deploy the network within three days and successfully demonstrate that it could deliver the 150Mbps to 220Mbps bandwidth required to support high-definition video feeds.

Tensions were high leading up to the November 10 event, which had already been moved from a different venue due to security concerns. In addition, wireless network implementations that used other technologies had failed when deployed at previous political events in Taiwan, placing extra emphasis on the need to deliver a secure and dependable network. On the day of the Congress, the Firetide-powered digital surveillance system operated beyond expectations, and security forces were able to view and respond to various attempts by demonstrators to breach barricades and launch projectiles at police officers.

The high-definition surveillance cameras also captured the acts of one protestor in particular, who fired several "firecracker rockets" at the anti-riot police and visiting KMT members. He was quickly apprehended and arrested by law enforcement officers.

The Firetide network solution for the 19thNational Congress of KMTThe new mesh network had to satisfy several requirements: Enable fast and easy deployment of a highly reliable wireless network.Support more than 180 Mbps of data generated by 18 high-definition video cameras (each HD CCTV camera required network bandwidth of at least 10-12 Mbps for optimum operation).Support PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) features on several cameras, with the ability to handle an occasional high-burst bit rate.Automatically handle potential network interruptions, ideally with self-healing properties.Handle a total of more than 216 hours of consistent recording from 18 high-definition cameras, maintaining crystal-clear and smooth video quality without jitter, latency, pausing, ghost-shadowing images, or black-out.A total of 10 Firetide HotPort 7020 mesh wireless nodes were deployed. Each offered on-board Ethernet connections to facilitate simple connection of the high-definition video cameras (30fps, 2 megapixel, H264).

"This was a high-profile project with extremely tight timeframes and stringent technical requirements," said Jeremy Koh, vice president of sales, Asia-Pacific for Firetide. "Working in close collaboration with an expert technical partner, we were able to help local authorities ensure the safety and security of President Ma Ying-Jeou and his VIP party. This is an excellent example of how Firetide can deliver a reliable mesh network to facilitate public safety and security at crucial events." Firetide addresses emerging applications in government, commercial and industrial settingsWireless mesh network infrastructure supports video surveillance, mobility, wireless backhaul offload and process automation for applications such as public safety, transportation and smart grid. Unique to Firetide's solution is its patented AutoMeshâ„¢ technology, which enables businesses, governments and industrial customers to view live, high-bandwidth video feeds reliably, securely and with low latency.
