Indian Regulator Blacklists 15 Telemarketing Companies [Global Data Point](Global Data Point Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) India's telecoms regulator has blacklisted 15 companies it accuses of breaching regulations on sending commercial marketing messages to mobile phones. It also issued warnings to a further 246 companies, and fined a number of them. Under regulations passed in 2011, telemarketers are required to register before being allowed to operate, and have to comply with an opt-out system that lets mobile phone users block marketing messages. Once authorised to send telemarketing messages, they are also required to put down a security deposit with the regulator, the TRAI, and it is from that fund that the fines have been taken. The companies are now required to top-up their deposits to remain compliant with the regulations. Since the regulations came into effect, the number of complaints about telemarketing messages has dropped considerably, although there are still unlicensed senders operating in the country.
