Clinton Foundation and Partners Announce Health Codeathon

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) NEW YORK, Aug. 7 -- The William J. Clinton Foundation issued the following news release: Ace Hotel New York has enlisted friends at Tumblr, the Clinton Foundation's Clinton Health Matters Initiative, Jawbone, Exhale and Sweetgreen to present a health-based codeathon, August 9-11. Building upon the powerful intersection of technology and health, the codeathon aims to spur innovation in the health and technology space and set a baseline standard for what a healthy codeathon environment should entail. Hosted by Ace Hotel, the event is Ace's first foray into the high-energy, high-impact world of marathon coding challenges.

Ace Hotel, Tumblr, the Clinton Health Matters Initiative, Jawbone, Exhale and Sweetgreen challenge interactive & game design master students from around the city to build a completely original and functional application prototype, based on one of the social determinants of health. The prototype can be web, mobile, or desktop-based, and can be developed via data sets, APIs, conceptually or through ideas of the developers' own device. For the first time, event partner Jawbone will allow exclusive access to its API for UP - the wristband and app system for better daily living - before opening it to the public later this year.

"We're excited to bring designers and hackers from the Tumblr community into the Ace Hotel to develop projects with health in mind." John Bunting, Lead API Engineer at Tumblr. "Tumblr has been a long supporter of tech communities developing on our API, and is proud to see these developers work together to do good in our hometown of New York City." Participating programmers gain invaluable experience working alongside their software-savvy peers, and learn from critiques by a top-tier judge panel.

The judges, led by New York's leading thinkers in games, tech, and health, review submissions based on six key criteria: playability, design, art, accomplishing the prompt, potential impact and each team's health.

In keeping with the Clinton Health Matters Initiative's commitment to help Americans live healthier lives, the health-focused codeathon will incorporate healthy living throughout the event, including nutritious food options by Sweetgreen, opportunities to stretch and exercise, and a collaborative, supportive environment. As part of each team's health criteria, Jawbone will provide UP bands so participants can monitor their sleep patterns, steps taken and meals throughout the weekend, and organizers will factor each team's healthy habits into the judging. Exhale instructors will be leading all the stretch and physical activity breaks during the event. Bonus points will be awarded to the teams that maintain healthy habits during the frantic race to the finish line.

The codeathon will take place at Ace Hotel, located at 20 West 29 Street in New York City. Friday's events kick off with a presentation from keynote speaker Jeremiah Robison, vice president of software at Jawbone. On Sunday, the events move to Ace Hotel New York's lobby, where the teams will continue to develop their applications from 9am-5pm. Sunday's playtest session and judging panel are free and open to the public. A playtest session offers designers final feedback on their work before they make any last-minute changes. Winners will be announced that day and will receive a JAMBOX by Jawbone and complimentary classes by Exhale.
