Varian Earns Gold Value Chain Award, Powered by Axeda

Jul 02, 2013 (Close-Up Media via COMTEX) -- Axeda Corp., a provider of cloud-based service and software for managing connected products and delivering machine-to-machine (M2M) applications, announced that Varian Medical Systems, a manufacturer of medical devices and software for treating cancer and other medical conditions, has won a gold Connected World Value Chain award in the medical category.

According to a release, Axeda took home the enabler award for providing Varian's connected product platform.

The Connected World magazine Value Chain Awards honor corporate adopters of M2M technology and the solution providers that made their success possible. The awards recognize the process of combining multiple technologies such as device-connectivity hardware, radio modules, network service and provisioning, as well as application software and infrastructure, to create a winning solution for the end customer.

Varian Medical Systems is a provider of M2M. The data and results from the SmartConnect solution inspired Varian to develop a patent-pending "Smart Scope," a 16 channel full-function software oscilloscope and functional digital volt meter that can be viewed remotely using Axeda. By enabling this remote view of the instrument, Varian is reducing onsite service calls, which provides significant savings for the company in travel cost reductions and reduced planned maintenance inspection (PMI) costs.

"Being recognized by Connected World is an honor, and is further validation of the power of the Axeda Machine Cloud in a rapidly evolving M2M ecosystem," said Dan Murphy, vice president of marketing at Axeda. "Our team is consistently inspired by customers like Varian, and their gold win is a testament to their commitment and focus on service and innovation." "Varian's customers are delivering potentially life-saving treatment in cancer centers around the world," said Brad Burton, Sr. Manager of Product Support Engineering for Varian's Oncology Systems business. "Our M2M remote servicing solutions help us to ensure that clinical teams using Varian technology are able to treat patients according to schedule, focusing on the patient while we focus on machine performance. It's immensely gratifying to have these efforts affirmed by 'Connected World' through this Value Chain award." "Congratulations go to Varian on their Gold Value Chain Award win, as well as technology enabler Axeda," said Peggy Smedley, editorial director, Connected World magazine. "Varian continues to demonstrate how connected devices can transform healthcare delivery and drive innovation."
