Burns & McDonnell and Symmetricom to Collaborate on Innovative New Timing Solution to Enhance Development of the Smart Grid

KANSAS CITY, MO, Jun 24, 2013 (Marketwired via COMTEX) -- Burns & McDonnell and Symmetricom(R) Inc. (NASDAQ: SYMM), an industry leader in precision timing and frequency technologies, today announced that the companies have partnered to develop and introduce an integrated electrical power timing solution that will enable deployment of intelligent end devices for utilities in field applications and within substations. Burns & McDonnell has integrated Symmetricom's SyncServer SGC-1500 Smart Grid Clock and the TimeProvider 5000 1588 PTP Grandmaster into its Smart Grid Lab to test the functionality, performance, and interoperability of integrated utility timing solutions.

Burns & McDonnell also announced today the successful participation in Symmetricom's new SyncWorld(R) Power Ecosystem Program. The new SyncWorld power utility-focused category aims to facilitate timing and synchronization deployments in substation modernization and synchrophasor applications by supporting integration and interoperability between power utility solutions and Symmetricom products. The power program compliments the existing telecom and mobile programs within the SyncWorld Ecosystem.

Burns & McDonnell and Symmetricom are collaborating in the specification, testing, and deployment of an integrated utility timing solution that spans the control center, the communications network, and the substation.

"Smart Grid deployments are underway and with the growing interest and demand, advanced smart grid technologies must be available if we are to truly revolutionize our systems," said Manish Gupta, vice president of marketing at Symmetricom. "With the introduction of the SyncWorld Power segment and this new partnership with Burns & McDonnell, we look forward to bringing more complete solutions to support Smart Grid advancement." "Power systems of the future require better time synchronization for intelligent substation and field devices to meet the demands on utilities," said Matthew Olson, Telecommunications Engineering Department Manager at Burns & McDonnell. "Our partnership with Symmetricom will enable us to test all aspects of a precision time protocol deployment, providing valuable data that will benefit our clients throughout North America." Integrated timing solutions will play a key role in helping power utilities enhance network utilization rates and improve management and mixing of renewables and traditional power sources. With the introduction of the Smart Grid, electrical substation operations are undergoing fundamental changes as power equipment and data networks shift from simple, reactive control and reporting to proactive, real-time management and operations control.

Advanced synchronization and timing play a critical role in enabling this transition. With Smart Grid-focused solutions, power utility companies will be able to mitigate outages with real-time monitoring for grid stress, frequency instability, voltage instability and reliability margins. Ecosystem vendors in the new Power category represent all major components required in substation and synchrophasor applications, including switch vendors and intelligent electronic device (IED)/phasor measurement unit (PMU) vendors. In order to qualify, vendors must complete successful solution testing, and commit to ongoing technical and business activities to ensure joint success.

The integration of Symmetricom's SyncServer SGC-1500 Smart Grid Clock and the TimeProvider 5000 PTP Grandmaster into the Burns & McDonnell Smart Grid Lab allows Burns & McDonnell to test all aspects of a Precision Time Protocol (PTP) deployment and demonstrate its value.

Located within the Burns & McDonnell World Headquarters in Kansas City and configured with a field area, substation, wide area, and control center network, the Lab incorporates technologies from many different vendors that clients are using to modernize the power grid.
