Multi-Tech Systems, BI Inc. and Verizon Receive a 2013 Connected World Value Chain Award

Minneapolis, MN, Jun 14, 2013 (PRWeb.com via COMTEX) -- Multi-Tech(R) Systems, a leading M2M (machine-to-machine) communications solution provider, along with BI Incorporated, a national provider of treatment, training and supervision programs for community corrections agencies at the federal, state, and local level, and Verizon Wireless, a leader in wireless voice and data services, received a 2013 Value Chain Award at the annual Connected World Conference in Santa Clara, CA on June 12. The Awards recognize the most successful adopters of M2M communications technology and the teams of solution providers that made their successes possible.

Selected by a panel of top industry analysts and experts, the awards highlight the process of combining multiple technologies, such as the carrier-approved Multi-Tech Systems embedded cellular modems and the BI HomeGuard 206 electronic monitoring system, to create a winning M2M solution.

The BI HomeGuard 206 DS electronic monitoring system is a radio frequency system that continuously verifies the presence or absence of a client at a specific location, usually the home. Using a cellular connection, the receiver reports the client's presence or absence to the monitoring computer which determines whether the client is adhering to (or in violation of) his or her authorized schedule. If the computer detects a violation, it generates an alert, and the monitoring center sends a notification through the method(s) specified by the supervising agency or officer.

Without this solution, a person under supervision who does not have a land line would have to report to an agency two to three times per week to download device data, often requiring lengthy travel time and difficulties maintaining a job due to reporting requirements during business hours. A cellular device installed in the home alleviates all of those issues. The Multi-Tech cellular modem enhances the BI product line at a minimal cost, while providing greater flexibility to customers.

Thanks to M2M communications enabled by a ready-to-integrate Multi-Tech Systems SocketModem(R) Cell embedded cellular modem, BI was able to quickly develop a solution that allows real-time access to data from these offender monitoring devices. Multi-Tech Systems' embedded device networking solutions with Universal Socket, a flexible comm-port architecture, allowed BI to add cellular communications capability to its system with minimal engineering effort. BI was also able to significantly save time and costs associated with pursuing their own carrier approvals since Multi-Tech embedded cellular modems are pre-approved for use as end devices.

In addition, no changes were required to the existing BI analog communications protocols. BI was able to leverage the AT command interface in the modem to open a socket connection that provides the M2M communication to BI TotalAccess(R), its flagship consolidated monitoring platform. Modifying the communications servers to support the M2M data stream was a relatively straightforward task.

"The BI solution is another example of how M2M technology is improving business efficiency. We are proud of our partnership with BI and this prestigious industry award," said Gregg Zastrow, senior product marketing manager, Multi-Tech Systems.
