PowerStream launches environmentally-conscious Twitter contest

VAUGHAN, Ontario, Jun 12, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE via COMTEX) -- Although the look and smell of a freshly cut lawn is pleasing to most of us, if it takes one-hour to complete using an inefficient two-stroke gas-powered lawn mower, the pollution emitted would be equivalent to what an average-sized car expels driving from Toronto to Ottawa.

In recognition of this, PowerStream, a community-owned energy services company that is committed to the environment and sustainable growth, has launched a "Recharge Your Summer" Twitter contest where participants can earn chances to win an environmentally-friendly, Black & Decker rechargeable cordless lawn mower.

In order to be eligible to win, participants must be Ontario residents, at least 18 years of age and follow @PowerStreamNews on Twitter. They must also retweet at least one of several specified tweets during the contest period, currently underway and which ends on Friday, June 28, 2013. Chances for participants to win increase each time they retweet one of the specified tweets. More information on how to participate can be found on the contest pageat PowerStream's corporate website.

The launch of the contest coincides with the one-year anniversary of the company's social media sites being introduced on June 28, 2012. In the past year, PowerStream has utilized its social media properties to communicate messaging related to the environment and conservation as well as keep customers informed on outages, service offerings and other related news.

The "Recharge Your Summer" contest also features information on environmentally-friendly gardening practices and promotes the use of PowerStream's social blog and news network as a resource for finding interesting articles related to other subject areas such as safety, solar generation, smart grid and the electricity industry in general.

QUOTE -- The environmental impact from the use of gas-powered lawn mowers each summer is a growing concern," explained PowerStream's Board Chair and the Mayor of the City of Markham, Frank Scarpitti. "A rechargeable cordless lawn mower is not only a more environmentally-friendly way to cut your lawn, you can also save money by recharging the mower's batteries when electricity prices are at their lowest during off-peak periods." BACKGROUND -- "Recharge Your Summer" is the second contest PowerStream has run on Twitter following the company's launch of its social media sites on June 28, 2012. The first contest, "FollowtheSmartGridtoWin", held in Fall 2012, helped consumers learn about the benefits of Smart Grid technologies now being developed and installed in distribution systems across the Ontario as well as the province's transmission grid.

-- PowerStream's Twitter site @PowerStreamNews, is part of the company's social blog and news network which also includes an innovative blog website called eStream, a YouTube channel entitled PowerStreamTV, a Linkedin page and a Facebook page. The company plans on launching a Google+ page in 2013.
