BRIEF: K.G. schools buying new laptops, serversJun 12, 2013 (The Free Lance-Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The King George School Board voted Monday to approve two technology purchases totaling more than $170,000 to replace outdated servers and laptops. The cost of the servers as well as the laptops is included in the 2012-2013 budget. King George schools will buy four new servers that use Microsoft 2012 virtual server technologies to replace the 25 to 30 current servers, some which are 10 years old. The new servers will save on power costs, replacement costs, backup costs and space availability, according to the Dan Hopper, supervisor of technology. Technology provider CDW-G said the update could cost $143,613. Hopper called the purchase "expensive, but still a viable, cheaper way" for a more efficient server system. The second purchase will provide King George High School with 31 new laptops to replace the seven-year-old ones currently being used. The cost for the 14-inch HP ProBook laptops, which are being purchased from Attronica Computers Inc., is about $33,015. The current laptops, which are slow to start and require replacement batteries, are not suitable for instructional or testing purposes, Hopper said.
