Clovis High star Jake Gatewood invited to Wrigley Field showcase

May 21, 2013 (The Fresno Bee - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Clovis High junior Jake Gatewood was selected to the Under Armour All-America Baseball Game, which will feature 36 of the nation's best underclassmen Aug. 24 at Wrigley Field.

The 3:30 p.m. PDT game will be televised on the MLB Network.

Players are selected by a committee from the Baseball Factory, which develops programs nationally to help groom baseball players.

Gatewood is a 6-foot-4, 190-pounder shortstop/pitcher/outfielder who has committed to USC. He's hitting .320 and is 5-1 with a 2.02 ERA for the Cougars (24-8), who will play at Clovis North (25-6) Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in a Central Section Division I semifinal.

"Jacob is a tall, athletic infielder who has demonstrated big power at the plate," said Steve Bernhardt, chairman of the Under Armour All-America Game selection committee. "He has a loose swing with bat speed and leverage, allowing him to drive the ball to all parts of the park. With a knack for making the game look easy, he will be fun to watch at Wrigley Field this summer." In the past five years, 118 of the 138 draft-eligible players from the Under Armour All-America Game were selected in the MLB Amateur Draft, including 34 first-round picks.
