Netronome sells line of traffic inspection devices to Sunnyvale, Calif., Web security firm

May 10, 2013 (The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Netronome Inc., a Cranberry-based developer of network flow processors, sold its line of network traffic inspection devices to Blue Coat Systems Inc. of Sunnyvale, Calif., a market leader in Web security. Terms of the sale were not disclosed.

Blue Coat Systems acquired the SSL appliance product line to address the increasing amount of encrypted traffic on the Internet. SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer, a way of encrypting information. Netronome's market-leading SSL appliances enable high-speed decryption to allow inspection of information on a network. If left uninspected, traffic on sites such as Google and Facebook can hide threats or other malicious activities.

Netronome's products are developed in labs in Santa Clara, Calif., Boxborough, Mass., and Cranberry.

The sale frees Netronome to focus its efforts on continuing to develop its super-fast processors, based on technology licensed from Intel Corp. that allows companies to filter out viruses and malware.

In April, Netronome raised $19 million in capital from four venture capital firms to accelerate research and development to meet demand for its latest product, called NFP-6xxx, introduced in June.

The computer-chip design company was started in 2003 by former employees of Fore Systems Inc. and other Pittsburgh-area technology companies.
