BRIEF: 5 National Merit winners from Charlotte area


Apr 24, 2013 (The Charlotte Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Five Charlotte-area students are among the first group of National Merit Scholarship winners announced this year.

They are winners of the National Merit's Corporate-Sponsored scholarships. The awards go to top high school seniors who are employees of sponsoring corporations, live in communities served by the companies, or plan to pursue careers that the sponsoring companies want to encourage.



Most of the awards are renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study, providing annual stipends ranging from $500 to $10,000. Some provide a single payment between $2,500 and $5,000.

Local winners: Arjun Adhia (N.C. School of Science and Mathematics student from Mooresville); planning a career in computer science; won Teradata Scholarship.


Sidharth Bhadauria (S.C. Governor's School for Science and Mathematics student from Fort Mill); economics career; Arkema Inc. Scholarship.

Noah Caldwell (Ardrey Kell High School), law career; National Gypsum Scholarship.

Derry Delventhal (Hickory Ridge High School), undecided on career; Electrolux North America Scholarship.

Kayla Howes (Olympic High School), chemical engineering career; Parker Hannifin Scholarship.
