Pro Bono Partnership Names McCarter & English Outstanding Law Firm Volunteer of the Year

NEWARK, N.J. --(Business Wire)--

McCarter & English was honored to receive the Outstanding Law Firm Volunteer of the Year award from the Pro Bono Partnership at a ceremony in New York City Wednesday night.

Each year more than 150 corporations and law firms and as many as 900 individual attorneys respond to the Pro Bono Partnership's call to provide free legal assistance to its clients - nonprofit organizations serving the poor or providing other important social and community services in Connecticut, New Jersey and New York. The Partnership annually celebrates the most extraordinary volunteers by issuing Volunteers of the Year awards to one corporation, one law firm and a handful of volunteers.

McCarter earned the law firm award after 40 of the firm's lawyers volunteered through the Partnership over the past two years, undertaking 44 matters for 28 different nonprofit organizations.

"This is a great honor because the Pro Bono Partnership is such an exceptional organization," said Stephen M.Vajtay, Jr., McCarter's managing partner. "Through the Partnership we have been able to provide important legal services to many worthy causes, and we plan to continue to make our work with the Partnership a critical part of our pro bono program."

McCarter's projects through the Partnership have included:

  • Assisting Habitat for Humanity Newark in the acquisition of land for the development and sale of low-income housing - pro bono work that has enabled more than 30 low-income families to enjoy the benefits of home ownership and a safer environment in which to raise their children.
  • Providing a broad range of employment advice to Bethsaida Community in Hartford as part of what became the Partnership's 2011 Nonprofit Project of the Year.
  • Establishing a regional, centrally-located, multi-agency shared space for the Connecticut Association of Nonprofits where many non-profits could locate - a project done in partnership with attorneys from Pratt & Whitney.

"The Partnership enables us to maximize the impact of our pro bono program because when we are helping nonprofit organizations, we are helping an immeasurable number of the disadvantaged communities that those groups serve," said Emily Goldberg, McCarter's pro bono director.
