Miller Applauds Adoption of House STEM Resolution

Feb 26, 2013 (Congressional Documents and Publications/ContentWorks via COMTEX) -- February 26, 2013 Contact: CHA Press Office (202) 225-8281 Miller Applauds Adoption of House STEM Resolution WASHINGTON - Today, House Administration Chair Candice Miller, R-Mich., applauded House passage of the Academic Competition Resolution of 2013, a bipartisan resolution establishing an academic competition promoting innovation among students from across the country in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. Upon passage, Miller issued the following statement: "Today, through its overwhelming bipartisan support of the Academic Competition Resolution, the House acknowledged the need to improve this nation's focus on education in STEM-related fields, which have become vital in today's global economy.

"As leaders, educators and parents, we must work to bring STEM education in the U.S. up to par with other countries or jeopardize losing well-paying jobs and revenue to overseas competitors. Although small, I believe that this competition is an important step towards raising national awareness and inspiring today's youth.

"I want to thank House Leadership for their support of this important initiative and Ranking Member Robert Brady for his efforts to send a strong signal to the rest of the world that the U.S. will remain competitive and a leader in the STEM fields for the foreseeable future." The Academic Competition Resolution of 2013, sponsored by Miller, establishes an annual House-wide STEM competition for students across the country. Modeled after the Congressional Art Competition, it will allow Members to host an annual STEM contest for students in their congressional district. Winning entries will be recognized by the House.
