Layton Christian ready for tourney run

Feb 26, 2013 (Standard-Examiner - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The state 1-A boys basketball tournament begins Wednesday, with defending champion Layton Christian Academy geared up for another tourney run.

Coach Bobby Porter's Eagles (14-8) open play against either West Ridge or Valley at 10 a.m. at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield Tintic (17-3), Rich (13-5), Monticello (17-3) and Panguitch (18-4) are the other top seeds in the tournament, which runs through Saturday.

The Eagles' toughest test might come from Region 17 rival St. Joseph, which is playing well. Coach Chad Loosemore's Jayhawks hope to at least achieve one goal: win an opening-round tournament game.

The Jayhawks (14-6) meet Tabiona at 5:30 p.m. in their opener.

Newcomer Legacy Prep (10-4), a Davis County school, takes on Panguitch in the late game, set for 8:30 p.m.

General classroom seminars cover the nuts and bolts of working with high school student athletes in a National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) mountain bike club and provide basic knowledge about the league and how to operate a program.

For more information on the Leader Summit, visit www.utahmtb.org/events/leader-summit/.
