Kernels chosen as 1 of state's top mascots

Feb 21, 2013 (The Daily Republic - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Mitchell Kernels have been nominated as a contender for the best high school mascot in the nation, a search conducted by USA Today.

Mitchell was one of five schools chosen from South Dakota in the first round of the contest. The other four mascots include: Sturgis Scoopers, Rapid City Central Cobblers, Sioux Valley Cossacks and Newell Irrigators.

"A couple of weeks ago, I got an email from a gentleman at USA Today looking for some tidbits about our mascot," Mitchell Activities Director Geoff Gross said. "I was informed (Wednesday) that we were a finalist for the state level and the list was announced." In order for the Kernels to win the state round, they must receive the top number of votes from fans.

"Most mascots are intimidating and we're a cuddly vegetable," Gross said. "Hopefully we can win the cute vote." The winner of the state contest will move onto the regional round where fans have another opportunity to vote their favorite mascots into the final round.

The top six mascots, one from each region, have the chance to be named the best high school mascot in America. Prize money will be awarded to the top six schools' athletic departments.

Fans can vote at to help the Mitchell Kernels win the state contest. The state contest begins at 11 a.m. Monday and ends at 3 p.m. on March 25.
