With major expansion, UN now has world's largest collection of trademark records

Feb 21, 2013 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) -- The United Nations World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has made it easier for anyone, anywhere to search for information on trademarks and brand-related information, thanks to a major expansion of its public database.

The agency, based in Geneva, has added six national collections of trademark records, including the entire United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) collection, to its Global Brand Database. This takes the database from 2.2 million to 10.9 million records, it said in a news release .

"WIPO's Global Brand Database is now the world's number one free, public resource for searching trademarks and other brand-related information," said the agency's Director General, Francis Gurry.

He noted that WIPO's public databases are central to the UN's wider efforts to create "an open, inter-connected and inclusive IP knowledge-sharing infrastructure, which makes it easy for anyone, anywhere, to access the wealth of information in the intellectual property system." The unified database -- which now includes national data collections made available by Algeria, Australia, Canada, Egypt, Estonia, Morocco, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates and the US -- streamlines trademark searches, allowing users to simultaneously search 12 data collections via a single interface, rather than searching separately the trademark data of WIPO and other offices.

Mr. Gurry welcomed the interest shown by many other intellectual property offices in joining in the data-sharing project in the near future.
