Scranton Comes Together To Stop AIDS

Scranton, PA, Feb 20, 2013 (PRWeb.com via COMTEX) -- Three Scranton-area organizations are joining with the Office on Women's Health, within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to take action against HIV/AIDS. On March 7, 2013, Maternal and Family Health Services, United Neighborhood Centers of NEPA and The Wright Center for Primary Care will hold Stop, Think, Act: An All-Ages AIDS Empowerment Workshop at UNC's Progressive Center, 414 Olive Street, Scranton, PA. This free event is being held in celebration of National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day to shed light on the disease's often overlooked impact on women and girls.

Against the backdrop of 11,200 new HIV infections among U.S. women per year -- most of whom are black and Latina -- Stop, Think, Act will kick off at 6 pm and feature free HIV and STI screenings, a talk by area Infectious Disease Specialist Dr. Shubhra Shetty, and contests and prizes. Educational booths from Maternal and Family Health Services and SafeTeens.org feature individual and community-level strategies to end the epidemic.

In addition, Stop, Think, Act organizers invite area photography enthusiasts to submit AIDS awareness photography to F-Stop: An AIDS Awareness Photo Contest in the weeks leading up to the event. The Contest's winning photo and ten runners up will be selected for F-Stop: Ending AIDS One Pixel at a Time, a traveling exhibit that will open at Stop, Think, Act.
